In just one year, the aviation sector has experienced an alarming increase in the frequency of cyberattacks, increasing sevenfold worldwide. This situation has triggered alerts throughout the industry, as it affects not only airlines, but also airports, navigation systems, suppliers and other entities that make up this highly interconnected chain.

From operational attacks to strategic threats
A recent report warns that these attacks are no longer limited to disrupting operations; they now have much more strategic targets. An increase in industrial cyberespionage, the theft of sensitive technology, disruption of supply chains and even obtaining data related to diplomatic travel has been identified. All of this reflects a dangerous convergence between geopolitical conflicts and digital threats.
During the period from January 2024 to April 2025, there were 27 attacks specifically targeting the aerospace sector, perpetrated by 22 different groups specializing in ransomware.
This trend suggests a clear prioritization of the aviation sector as a target of financial, ideological and global power interests.
Aviation cyberattacks: an expanding risk
This scenario has led to estimates that place the value of the global aviation cybersecurity market at more than US$5 billion by 2025, with a projection of sustained growth due to the advance of digitalization and the intensification of cyber threats.
What can Mexico learn?
Although this scenario has been observed internationally, it represents a direct warning for Mexico. The country, with its growing air traffic and modernization of airport infrastructures, must strengthen its cybersecurity strategies in the aviation sector.
Investing in technology, training specialized talent and establishing incident response protocols will be key to prevent these threats from impacting national security, the economy and travelers' trust.
