During a recent meeting of the banking sector in Mexico, the urgency of raising the levels of digital security and expanding access to banking services was highlighted, especially in sectors that today feel excluded or poorly served.

Cooperation between banks is key in the face of digital threats
In her speech, the head of Banco de México stressed that one of the main challenges currently facing the national financial system is to effectively address cyber risks. She pointed out that:
“financial institutions must continue to improve their capabilities to prevent, detect and respond to possible cyber attacks that put the stability of the system at risk.”
To achieve this, it is essential to strengthen internal governance mechanisms and improve communication between entities in the sector. It is also important that banks work on strengthening their technological infrastructure with a preventive approach, which will allow them to react quickly to cybersecurity incidents and mitigate damages.
Financial cybersecurity and inclusion: two urgent challenges
A call was made to foster a culture of collaboration between institutions, in which experiences are shared and cyber incidents are reported in a transparent manner.
This cooperation could be key to raising the level of protection throughout the country's financial ecosystem.
In the context of digital transformation, there was also a warning about the challenge posed by the use of algorithms and personal data since, without adequate regulation, these can lead to decisions that negatively affect users or promote unfair practices.
In terms of financial inclusion, it was recognized that Mexico still has some way to go, as many citizens perceive that banking services are expensive or do not respond to their real needs.
This limits access to essential financial products and slows economic growth.
The Mexican experience can be seen reflected in international trends, where it has been demonstrated that an appropriate combination of technological innovation, sound financial cybersecurity and inclusion policies significantly improves user confidence and strengthens the digital economy.
