Beware of the new WhatsApp scam

WhatsApp, one of the most widely used messaging apps in the world and also in Mexico, has become a constant target for cybercriminals. The latest form of fraud takes advantage of video calls to deceive users and obtain personal and banking information, and even total control of their accounts.

The fraud begins with a call from a known contact. During the call, the screen goes black and the supposed friend or family member indicates that they are having a problem with their device.

As part of the scam, they ask the user to share their screen to check if it is working.

At that moment, the victim receives an SMS with the WhatsApp security code. Since the screen is being shared, this code is exposed and the criminal uses it to take over the account. Once inside, they usually send messages to other contacts requesting money urgently, increasing the scope of the scam.

Consequences and risks in Mexico

Although this case was initially reported in Spain, it serves as a warning for Mexico. The widespread use of WhatsApp in the country makes it an attractive channel for digital fraud. A WhatsApp scam like this can lead to the loss of personal data, access to private conversations, and manipulation of trust between family and friends.

Recommendations for protection

To avoid falling victim to this type of attack, it is essential to follow good digital security practices:

  • Do not share your screen during a video call without being certain of the other person's identity.

  • Never reveal your WhatsApp verification code, as it is personal and non-transferable.

  • Enable two-step verification to add an extra layer of security.

  • If you lose access to your account, reinstall the app to receive a new code.

  • Inform your contacts immediately if you suspect impersonation.

  • Gather evidence and file a report with the appropriate authorities.

Prevention: the best defense against WhatsApp scams

The WhatsApp scam shows how cybercriminals are constantly adapting to deceive users. In Mexico, where this app is part of everyday life, it is essential to strengthen digital education and promote prevention.
