Cybersecurity in Mexico: An urgent task for companies

Cybersecurity in Mexico faces one of its greatest challenges: the lack of prevention and digital culture within organizations. Although cyberattacks have become more frequent and sophisticated, many companies still do not have solid strategies in place to protect their information.

During the first half of 2025, Mexico recorded more than 40 billion cyberattack attempts, an alarming figure that reflects the rapid growth of digital threats.

In addition, cybercriminals have begun to use artificial intelligence-based tools to refine their attacks, further complicating detection and timely response.

The country ranks among the top ten countries with the highest number of cyberattack attempts worldwide, and one of the main causes is technological backwardness and a lack of training in computer security. In many organizations, it is still believed that cybersecurity is the sole responsibility of the technology department, when in fact it should involve all areas, from human resources to general operations.

Certifications and digital culture: Pillars of cybersecurity in Mexico

Currently, Mexico has fewer than 600 ISO 27001 certifications, an international standard that accredits the proper management and protection of information. Considering that there are more than 5 million companies in the country, this figure is concerning.

ISO 27001 certification establishes the requirements for implementing an information security management system, with controls covering organizational, human, physical, and technological aspects.

This type of certification not only demonstrates responsibility to customers but also builds trust with suppliers and investors.

Adopting these practices does not necessarily imply a large financial investment. The most important thing is the willingness and commitment to protect data. Simple measures such as enabling multi-factor authentication, changing passwords regularly, and avoiding repetition can make a big difference.

Ransomware: the most persistent threat

Among the most common attacks in Mexico is ransomware, a technique that hijacks companies' information until a ransom is paid.

This type of threat does not distinguish between size or sector, so any organization can be a victim.

A single click on a malicious email can compromise the entire internal network if the user has privileged permissions. Therefore, ongoing staff training is essential to prevent human error from becoming security breaches.

Towards greater digital protection

The cybersecurity landscape in Mexico demands immediate action. Companies must adopt a strong digital culture, invest in training, and seek certifications such as ISO 27001 to strengthen their resilience to cyber threats.

It's not just about technology, but also about responsibility and prevention.
