Chess.com, recognized as one of the largest platforms for playing chess online, confirmed that it suffered a security incident in June, where attackers managed to access information from some of its users.
According to the company, cybercriminals exploited a vulnerability in an external file transfer application used by the platform.
Although the access was quickly detected on June 19 and reported to U.S. federal authorities, the scope of the attack affected more than 4,500 people.

Risks and lessons learned from a data breach
The company has not specified exactly what type of data was exposed. However, it assured that no accounts, passwords, or financial information were leaked. This means that players can continue to use the platform with relative security, although it is still advisable to maintain good cybersecurity practices, such as changing passwords as a preventive measure.
Context and lessons for Mexico
Although the incident occurred in the United States, it serves as an important reminder for Mexico. Digital platforms that store large amounts of user data, whether for entertainment, education, or online banking, are attractive targets for cybercriminals.
This case highlights the need for Mexican companies to strengthen their cybersecurity protocols and review their third-party tools, as many breaches originate with external providers.
The magnitude of Chess.com and the impact of the attack
With over 100 million registered players and around 10 million games played daily, Chess.com is a highly relevant global community. Although the incident affected a minimal percentage of users, the data breach once again highlights the importance of digital protection on mass platforms.
So far, no cybercriminal group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and there is no evidence that the information obtained has been published online or used fraudulently.
At Cyberpeace, we believe that every security incident is an opportunity to learn and strengthen digital protection. Prevention and education in cybersecurity are key to reducing online risks.
