Data breach at Kering affects millions

Cybersecurity remains a challenge even for the most prestigious companies. Luxury fashion group Kering recently confirmed that it was the victim of a data breach that compromised information on around 7.4 million customers of well-known brands such as Gucci, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen.

The attackers managed to temporarily access the company's systems and obtained sensitive records including names, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, and purchase details.

Some transactions amounted to between $10,000 and $86,000.

Although no bank or credit card details were exposed, the risk of fraud remains. Experts warn that this type of information can be used to steal identities, take over accounts, or commit fraud through SIM card swapping.

Lessons from the data breach for Mexico

The attack appears to have occurred after internal credentials were stolen, probably through a phishing campaign targeting corporate portals. This scenario serves as an example for Mexico, where more and more companies are handling large volumes of personal and financial data.

If such cases affect global corporations, Mexican companies (from banks to the retail sector) must strengthen their access and authentication protocols to prevent similar intrusions.

The investigation points to the cybercriminal group Shiny Hunters, responsible for other attacks on luxury sector firms. In response, Kering notified data protection authorities and affected customers, in addition to refusing to pay the ransom demanded, in line with the recommendations of security agencies.

The importance of prevention in cases of data breaches

This case confirms the importance of preventive measures, such as phishing training, multi-factor authentication, and constant monitoring of internal access. In Mexico, applying these practices can make the difference between a minor incident and a crisis that affects customer confidence.

At Cyberpeace, we believe that every cybersecurity incident is an opportunity to learn and strengthen digital protection. Prevention and awareness are key to avoiding risks and protecting your personal information. Want to stay up to date on cybersecurity and online privacy?
