A new cybersecurity incident has set off alarm bells in the telecommunications sector. The company Movistar was the victim of a cyber attack, in which a cybercriminal managed to gain access to a huge database containing confidential information of users in Peru and Spain. It has been revealed that the attacker (under the alias “Dedale”) has already leaked part of this information as proof of his reach.
The released database contains approximately one million records, including full names, ID numbers, cell phones, contracted plans and service status details.
It should be noted that a single person can have multiple records, so 22 million individual accounts were not necessarily compromised, although the volume is still alarming.

What is the attacker looking for?
The cybercriminal is demanding a relatively low sum ($1,500 dollars) as a ransom not to publish the rest of the information. This figure contrasts with the high amounts usually demanded in similar attacks, which has aroused even more interest in the case.
Another element that has generated attention is that the attack was publicly revealed by a firm specializing in digital security, through the social network X.
According to its analysis, the database could include customer information in other countries where Movistar operates, so the risk could extend beyond Peru and Spain.
Mexico should learn from the hacking of Movistar
Although this attack did not occur in Mexican territory, it does represent a key case study. Companies that handle large amounts of personal data, such as telecommunications companies, should be alert to this type of threat.
The Movistar hack demonstrates that no region is exempt from international cybercrime.
Mexico, in particular, faces growing cybersecurity challenges. This case can serve as an urgent call for Mexican companies and authorities to review and strengthen their digital defense systems. Protecting the data of millions of citizens must be a priority in times where attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and frequent.
